Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner Review

I’ve only used this bad boy a few times so far……but it’s fair to say, that when used appropriately, it is an absolutely AMAZING deep conditioner.

Now, this conditioner is DEFINITELY not for the “all-natural” lover! If you are someone who is highly ingredients conscious, then this product is most definitely NOT for you! Due to the heavy silicones in this product, I use it for one occasion only…..

When I heat style!

So yes……if you are against putting heat on your hair, you may not have much need for this conditioner.

Although it says that it’s formulated for dry/damaged hair, the silicones in the ingredients are so heavy that it’s likely to cause unnecessary product build up and end up drying out already dry hair even further.

Ingredients:

Water, Isopentyldiol, Sorbitol, Dimethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Pentapeptide-29 Cysteinamide, Pentapeptide-30 Cysteinamide, Tetrapeptide-28 Argininamide, Tetrapeptide-29 Argininamide, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Algin, Sea Water, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Isopropyl Alcohol, Aminopropyl Dimethicone, Steartrimonium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, PEG-90M, PEG-6 Methyl Ether Dimethicone, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Stearyl Dihydroxypropyldimonium Oligosaccharides, Propylene Glycol, DMDM Hydantoin, Limonene, Benzyl Benzoate, Fragrance, Ext. Violet 2, Yellow 5, Blue 1, BCC12-Base

Oh yes…..the ingredients are faaaaaarrrrrr from natural!

However, as I said, this conditioner is only for use before I apply high heat such as a flat iron or curling wand to my hair.

This is because heavy silicones such as dimethicone are very effective heat protectants. Fans of this conditioner, such as Sista With Real Hair, claim to use ONLY this conditioner before straightening their hair at 450°F/233°C, with no additional heat protectant added.

Not only is this conditioner supposedly highly moisturising, but it also claims to boast “bio-advanced peptide complex”. The ingredients include variations of three strong proteins and ceramides: Pentapeptide-29 Cysteinamide, Pentapeptide-30 Cysteinamide, Tetrapeptide-28 Argininamide, Tetrapeptide-29 Argininamide, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin.

Now, this is obviously not ideal if you are protein sensitive/low porosity, however this is definitely a good product to consider of your hair is higher porosity or has ever experienced any kind of chemical/heat damage at all.

I generally find that these rich proteins help to strengthen my hair before I do my rollerset and flat iron, which helps it to withstand high temperatures while I heat style. The conditioner is also super moisturising and has an OK (but very chemically) smell.

The texture is very thick and spreads pretty easily, however I have to say that detangling definitely isn’t the easiest with this product. If you have tighter curls, it may be easier to detangle your hair before you condition your hair. It does have a tendency to be on the annoyingly stick side too, which I personally find quite unpleasant.

However….I have to round it all up and say that it really does do an amazing job at protecting my hair when I flat iron. The silicone layer that the conditioner coats on the hair strands also helps to keep frizz at bay whilst I rock smoother styles.

I’d rate this product 7.5/10. I’d personally take caution when planning to use this as a deep conditioner as I have personally found that it can cause some pretty heavy product buildup. Be prepared to have to use some form of sulfate afterwards to remove the leftover residue.

Have you tried this conditioner before? Let me know what you thought in the comments!

Lotsa love,

  1. I’ve just been looking at a lot of Joico and Redken products. I did another bleach job last week so of course the hair is in heavy recovery but I decided to go along and do the Aphogee 2 step treatment as the curls are lagging but this is a good idea for curlies wanting a change in hairstyles safely. Going to keep note of this product xo
